Typically an excess of claims volume is met with one of two solutions:
- Close one’s eyes, hope for the best, hope that the DOI does not notice, and wait for the spike in claims volume to recede; or
- Hire temps – then hope for the best, hope that the DOI does not notice, and wait for the spike in claims volume to recede.
Of the two (b) is much more expensive but often is no more effective than (a) in dealing with a high tide of claims. The inability of temps to close files is well known.
